The essential challenge is to transform the isolation and self-interest within our communities into connectedness and caring for the whole. (Peter Block)

The Aroha Approach
Suicide Prevention
The Aroha Approach is a short, practical discussion on suicide prevention, designed for workplaces, sport clubs, social groups, and other communities. It is suitable for communities experiencing suicidal distress. The shortest version takes just 90 minutes and provides easy to remember interventions to assist someone at risk. It is available face to face or an online meeting. It is offered to communities for koha (donation), or a fixed sum for organisations who want to hold or sponsor an event. The presentation is developed by David Cairns who has a Masters in Suicidology and 25 years’ experience in suicide prevention. David is known for his ability to translate complex information into something practical. He is pākeha and the presentation is a blend of both European and Māori concepts.

The Shining Light Dojo is a community of martial arts practitioners who promote the principles of the arts.
To Suicide Prevention
We are a group of mostly New Zealand and Australian martial artists who believe living and teaching the morale and mental health principles is an important part of our martial art practice.
Therefore, we gather online to exchange knowledge, to develop theories and resources and support each other to implement the principles into our learning and teaching .
Technique and principle are just like the two wheels of a cart. Even though you may wield the sword that you carry with you well, if you are unclear on the deepest aspects of principle, you will likely fall short of proficiency. Soho, Takuan. The Unfettered Mind (p. 12). Shambhala. Kindle Edition.
I don’t think there is an opportunity to use martial techniques in the real world. The only part of our training we can use in the real world is the spiritual side. In other words, in society, at home, in school and in our jobs are the places where we realize the value of martial arts training. It is in society where we can engage in real martial arts training. About David Cairns
As an older man I have gained experience through life and expertise through continuous study. I have a degree in psychology, postgraduate diplomas and certificates in mental health and a Masters in Suicidology. From an early age I have shown compassion and empathy for my fellow man and challenged myself in many different helping roles. Fourteen years as a Corrections Officer, more than 30 years as a volunteer Ambulance Officer and Paramedic, and 12 years in suicide prevention. I have seen first hand the importance of communities and this lead to the study and use of community engagement, systems change, collective impact, positive enquiry and other models of collective wellbeing. I have helped so many people in times of crisis and now want to spend the rest of my working life helping people enjoy both work and play in safe enviroments. People who have heard me speak remark how I keep things real. I would love to meet you, reach out if you think I can have a positive impact our your communities health and wellbeing.
